Roger at The A-Team Blog reviews John Piper's newest book God Is the Gospel. One of the questions and criticisms raised by some in the Emergent movement is that the Gospel has been reduced by evangeicals to saving people from Hell to go to Heaven. Essentially, fire insurance that doesn't do much for this life. It's a fair concern about the way the Gospel is sometimes presented.
Piper's intense focus on God as the center of the Gospel is a helpful balance to some unbalanced theology. Piper points out that the Gospel is a way to get people to God. The Gospel is about reconciing a broken relationship that has consequences for how we live now and after this life because God is now our supreme joy.
