Many people who are faithful to Christ will be met with violent persecution. What is the correct response when faced with such violence?

In the Old Testament, if you killed someone breaking into your house God didn't consider it murder. “If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.” (Exodus 22:2)
So I assume doing the same under the New Testament would be OK. But I believe the mind we need to develop is one that uses deadly force as a pathetic last resort.
I also believe Christians should not join forces, being unequally yoked with unbelievers, under oath to submit to unbelievers in a militia.
